strange duck

black-bellied-whistling-duck-18191lr

The local bird watching world was atwitter last November when this unusual Black-bellied Whistling-Duck landed in Rehoboth Beach. This striking and gregarious duck of the Neotropics usually only reaches the United States in the very southern parts. Surviving the winter, this visitor now looks quite at home on Silver Lake.

Given the strange winter we had, I’d think this critter would have been quite cold in this neck of the woods. Wonder if he’ll venture back here next fall after that? :)
