great “really” blue heron

I always think of Great Blue Herons as being really more gray than blue. But when their wings are in the shade they can appear quite blue to the camera. This heron passed by me yesterday at Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge.

I had NO idea they looked that blue. I’ve always seen them the way you described them…as rather gray….and I wondered why they were called blue herons. Now I know. Thanks for photographic “evidence” that their name truly fits them!
