Ready For Her Close-up

Today at sunset the White-tailed Deer were out feeding in the last light of the day. This doe looked up for a second and I had my photograph.

Don’t Bite Your Tongue…

It might be easy to confuse this juvenile Black-crowned Night Heron with an American Bittern. As an adult this bird will be gray with a black cap and back. But as a young heron the camouflage stripes on the throat look very similar to the bittern.

A Big Yawn…

After Hurricane Bill

Hurricane Bill passed by the Delaware coast this weekend. While the storm was far offshore surfers were treated to nice waves. By this morning, the surf had calmed but the weather was still strange. To the south a thunderstorm was passing by early this morning. Here at Herring Point in Cape Henlopen State Park it was raining but the sun was visible on the horizon.

Gifts from Bill

Hurricane Bill moved past the Delmarva Peninsula early this morning after kicking up the swell. The category two hurricane brought head high waves to nearly all ocean beaches up and down the coast. Glassy conditions made for nice little barrels in the photograph above.

The scientific name, Callinectes sapidus, for the Blue Crab translates to Beautiful Swimmer. The state crustacean of Maryland is economically important to many waterfront communities up and down the Delmarva Peninsula.
