strange duck

black-bellied-whistling-duck-18191lr

The local bird watching world was atwitter last November when this unusual Black-bellied Whistling-Duck landed in Rehoboth Beach. This striking and gregarious duck of the Neotropics usually only reaches the United States in the very southern parts. Surviving the winter, this visitor now looks quite at home on Silver Lake.

great “really” blue heron

great-blue-heron-passing-3-24-09-18080

I always think of Great Blue Herons as being really more gray than blue. But when their wings are in the shade they can appear quite blue to the camera. This heron passed by me yesterday at Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge.

bad weather + on assignment

We had a week of dark, cloudy weather and bad light that didn’t allow any photography. Now I’m on assignment in Florida and Jay is vacationing in Costa Rica so there won’t be any new wildlife posts until next week.

Thanks for watching and I hope we will be able to add new post every day.

rush hour

Thousands of snow geese are still wintering in Delaware but as the weather warms they will migrate north to breed in Canada. Last night at sunset this large flock took off from a Kent County, Delaware field.
